How long do Staffies (Staffordshire Bull Terriers) live?

Question by Tonnina: How long do Staffies (Staffordshire Bull Terriers) live?
My husband and I are looking into getting the very adorable and perfect for our family Staffordshire bull terrier. In the Wikipedia entry there’s no information on how long they live. So how long do they live?

Certain factors will determine the life span of a pup.

Depending on vet care, diet, exercise and where it’s kept (inside or outside)

The normal expectancy is somewhere between 9 and 15 years.

We had a male Staffie and he passed away at 8. The average lifespan is 10-12 years. However, this breed is often afflicted with cancer. My dog passed away from lung cancer(no one in the house is/was a smoker) and had a leg tumor when he was 1. Just be sure to always take him in for his annual exams so they are more likely to catch things like this. The puppies are adorable and tons of fun. Even as adults they have lots of energy! Good luck!

According to http://dogbreedinfo.com, 10-16 years which is pretty vague.

I have one and they’re gorgeous dogs, love them to bits. Very energetic and playful and great with kids but they do need a ton of exercise. You’ll get the occasional ignorant idiot telling you that you have a dangerous dog because they have been known to be used for dog biting. But you have the opportunity to prove that they can be wonderful, friendly dogs!

Staffies usually live anywhere between 9 and fifteen years old with regular vet checks n what not to make sure they’re in great health. great choice for a dog by the way! I own an American Pit Bull Terrier my self. Bullies are great dogs ^.^

  • Save the Pits! says:

They are a healthier breed so with some luck, a decent upbringing, and no major health problems you’re looking at making it up to 15 years. 10-15 is a good estimate.

About 13 years, according to the NZKC website.

They’re an awesome breed, definitely one of my favourites, and good on you for doing the research to find out if they are perfect for your family.

  • KellyO says:

Staffies are medium size dogs that live an average of 12-14 years.

Unfortunately, many people mistake the Staffordshire Bull Terrier for a Pit Bull, so you need to be prepared to take the heat from some people who don’t know the breed.

They have very strong jaws so heavy duty toys are a must.

As with all dogs, early training and socialization is a must. This dog is in the Terrier Group so, like most Terriers, have a tendency to dig. They also may see small pets (like hamsters) as prey that they need to get rid off.

Finally, it is very important that you only buy this breed from a reputable breeder. Although the link below is for Golden Retrievers, you should look for the same thing in a Staffie breeder.
